Music Mondays - Sing-Along Songs

I'm a creature of habit. One of my habits includes obsesively listening to songs and watching movies over and over again. Of course, my favorite combination of these two was always the sing-along-song videos we always had growing up.

Of these, my all-time favorite was one set entirely in Disneyland - Disneyland Fun!

Along with some old Disney favorites such as "Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah" and "Whistle While You Work", the collection also featured several songs based on the theme park itself, like "It's a Small World" and "I'm Walkin' Right Down the Middle of Main Street U.S.A."

Even watching them now, these songs put a grin on my face that only politics can wipe away. These videos were probably some of my first bits of exposure to musicals and musical theater, and I think that Disney was a huge part of lives of anyone who grew up in the nineties. I remember that my visits to Disney World were some of my most vivid memories, despite the fact that most of the rides terrified me. I liked being completely immersed in a world of fantasy. I expect that's true of most children), so naturally this video drew in more than the others, as it brought back a lot of what I felt on those visits.

Among the numbers in this video were two that especially marked me as a child: "Makin' Memories" and "Grim Grinnin' Ghosts".

Now, I know why "Grim Grinnin' Ghosts" has stuck with me all this time - because it thoroughly and completely terrified me as a child. I literally could not watch it. I remember constantly having to fast-forward through it because I knew that watching it would give me nightmares.

Like this, but with a much prettier nightgown.
I guess it follows that "Makin' Memories" would be the other number I'd remember, seeing as it directly preceded "Grim Ginnin' Ghosts". I remember that I could never fully enjoy the song as I kept anticipating the moment I'd have to quickly press fast-forward on the VCR remote and avert my eyes so as only to read the lyrics so I'd know when it was safe to look again...

It's funny because though I almost always skipped it, I've apparently watched "Grim Grinnin' Ghosts" enough times to remember most of the lyrics. The riff at the beginning though, the ooooh ooooh ooooh ooooooooh... That would haunt my dreams. If I remember correctly, it became my trademark creepy song whenever I made up stories or games as a kid. It was the scariest thing I'd ever watched until "Signs" in sixth grade.

"The Duck in the ghost costume... HE'S COMING!!!!!"
It's sort of an interesting contrast when you think of it - at least for the grown-ups watching - filling you up with nostalgia about happier times then WHAM a song that's basically a thinly-veiled reminder of your own mortality. Should this have been a Macabre Monday instead?

"Tonight, a commentary on our most ingrained fears." "Yaaaaaaaay!!!"
Did you watch Sing Along Songs as a kid? Did you watch them, perhaps, with kids of your own? Do you have any favorites?

As you all know, I have a serious thing for cross-century voyeurism. Probably the only thing I like more than this is seeing how a period is portrayed within another period (for instance, Thoroughly Modern Millie, the 20s done in the 60s). What I like even better than this is seeing what people of the past thought the future would be like:

My favorite moment? 1:04: "Ooh, swish!"

It's a bit spooky, really, when past predictions hit so close to home. It's one thing to watch the Jetsons and wonder how they ever came up with those sorts of things, but another thing entirely to see near-accurate predictions.

Hope you liked it as much as I did,

Pin-Curls - An Experiment

So, after watching some really great demo videos by StrawberryKoi Vintage on Youtube, I decided I would try some pin curls in my hair that is finally long enough to do fun stuff with again.

Of course, I disregarded about half of the instructions and just sort went at my hair madly with bobby pins:

Again, barely any compliance with the tips set out by StrawberryKoi Vintage, but I was dying to try it and I was busy watching two lectures for my online classes. No time for accurate pin-curling. I left them in overnight (which isn't as uncomfortable as I was led to believe. I didn't get a chance to take them out until the evening, which gave me plenty of opportunities to terrify and confuse mailmen, electricians, and family members. Finally this is what came out:

You can thank the sudden cold snap here in New Orleans for my delightful wardrobe. The temperature bottomed out around 30 degrees F the previous night and of course our heater decided to break down just then... Anyway, after a bit of brushing out I ended up with something not half bad:

Do you like my sexy pose? This wasn't very different from what my hair normally looks like - just a bit poofier than usual. I suppose I can't complain since I didn't do the pin-curls properly... Oh well, back to the drawing board! I'm definitely going to be trying this again (maybe when my hair grows out a bit more). If anyone gets any good results from this great demo, please share!

Love and Bobby Pins,

Tired Old Queen at the Movies - "The Heiress"

So, thanks to Joe at Joe.My.God, I've had the fortune of stumbling onto this delightful character:

Steve Hays is the actor/comedian turned classic film critic. If you ask me, he almost puts TCM to shame, making classic film accessible to a generation that seeks only constant entertainment. Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge Turner Classic Movies fan, but it can become a trifle stuffy at times. Hayes manages to shake off the dust and move past the pomp and circumstance and just get to what makes these films wonderful! Here is his review of "The Heiress" from 1949:

See? Wasn't that fun? Anyway, I thought I'd share a little tidbit of my own regarding the aforementioned "Heiress". Edith Head, the world-renowned costume designer, specifically cut Ms. de Havilland's gowns so they would pinch and gap, making her feel uncomfortable in her own skin and enhancing the character's general self-consciousness. The only gown that was made to fit properly was the one de Havilland wears at the end of the film, once her character has come into her own. Now, I'm not saying that costumes can make or break a performance, but de Havilland did win an Oscar for this film (don't worry, so did Edith)... Just sayin'...

You know it's a good film, 'cause it says so on the poster.

I hope you enjoy Hayes' reviews as much as I do,

Kitten Update

Looking to adopt? Click here for more information!

I took the kittens to the vet today for their first real exams. Unfortunately there were some problems with his privates due to suckling by his sisters. Orphaned kittens tend to have a suckling complex since they cannot suckle at will from their mothers. Luckily, mine have stopped since being weened, but the damage was already done... The Orange One required a minor surgical procedure and is staying at the vet's over the weekend. I'm sick with worry and I miss him terribly. I know he'll be alright, but I can't help it. Please keep him in your thoughts and send him plenty of happy vibrations...

On a lighter note, the other kittens are doing just fine, though they are a bit underweight, according to the doctor. She encouraged me to let them eat as much as possible to keep them growing at a healthy rate. They have noticed their brother is gone, though. They're not playing as much as they normally do. Here are all four kittens yesterday, in a continuation of the video posted then:

Also, I would like to thank Angela Steele for being the first to donate to my Kitten fund! This video is dedicated to her! Thank you, Angela. The money will be going toward their vet bill.

Thanks,

More on the Kittens

Looking to adopt? Click here for more information!

If you take a gander at the right sidebar, you'll notice something new: a slideshow of pictures of the kittens, as well as a "donate" button. I've started a PayPal donation fund to help pay for vet bills, food, etc. I'm relying on your generosity to help keep me out of the poor house, since I am using my personal funds to take care of the kittens right now.

Being a full-time student, part-time blogger, and part-time mom doesn't leave room for work, so think of this as compensation for my blog posts on the kittens. The more donations I get, the more videos and photos of the kittens I will post! Here's a little teaser:

If you decide to donate, you should be aware that PayPal keeps about 3% of whatever you donate, so if you want to give me $5, you should make it $5.15 if you want me to get the full $5... Of course the kittens always welcome larger donations, but by no means is anyone obligated to donate.

The kittens are going in for their first official vet exam tomorrow, and I'll be sure to keep you all posted on their health!

Enjoy the video,
Nostalgically Yours

PS: They haven't learned to eat without making a mess, yet, so that's food on their schnoz, not poo!
