Yesterday I faced one of my biggest phobias at the 63rd Annual United Federation of Doll Clubs National Convention. I decided to push through the fear for two reasons. One, I'm considering starting up a line of paper dolls, and Two, vintage fashions!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left; text-indent: 25px;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left; text-indent: 25px;">
Similar to Comic Con and other conventions, the event featured vendors from all over the country and around the world, selling dolls and all sorts of accessories and other paraphernalia. I had a marvelous time (despite my discomfort) and met some positively lovely people. The following photographs will do a much better job at describing the event than I could. If you're interested in any of the merchandise or vendors you see, click the images for contact information or websites.</div>

<i>This booth was probably my favorite. After the vendor's mother passed, she and her family found these collections in her house. So I ultimately had a good time and was able to get past my anxieties. There is one doll that I omitted from this post for the simple reason that the photo I thought I took of her vanished from my phone. You can see The Merry Widow Allegra<a href="http://www.rubylane.com/item/394302-LG220188/All-Original-x93Merry-Widow-Allegrax94" target="_blank"> here</a>. She's a rather funny, very unusual doll, so do check her out! If you're curious about the UFDC, you can visit their website here. Have a great weekend, readers!</div>

This week's comic is actually closely related to <a href="http://nostalgicallyyours.blogspot.com/2012/07/music-mondays-sing-along-songs.html" target="_blank">Monday's article</a>. If you read it, you'll understand why. If you haven't, well... Why haven't you?</div>

I'm a creature of habit. One of my habits includes obsesively listening to songs and watching movies over and over again. Of course, my favorite combination of these two was always the sing-along-song videos we always had growing up.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left; text-indent: 25px;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left; text-indent: 25px;">
Of these, my all-time favorite was one set entirely in Disneyland - Disneyland Fun!</div>
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0009X75W4/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=nostalgic04-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B0009X75W4"></a><a href="http://media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lvsvweOMdN1qhtoo2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="533" src="http://media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lvsvweOMdN1qhtoo2.jpg" width="300" /></a><img alt="" border="0" height="1" src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=nostalgic04-20&l=as2&o=1&a=B0009X75W4" style="border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;" width="1" /></div>
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left; text-indent: 25px;">
Along with some old Disney favorites such as "Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah" and "Whistle While You Work", the collection also featured several songs based on the theme park itself, like "It's a Small World" and "I'm Walkin' Right Down the Middle of Main Street U.S.A."</div>
<br />
<br />
<center><iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="375" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/TpSBYMMpPHc" width="500"></iframe></center><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left; text-indent: 25px;">
Even watching them now, these songs put a grin on my face that only politics can wipe away. These videos were probably some of my first bits of exposure to musicals and musical theater, and I think that Disney was a huge part of lives of anyone who grew up in the nineties. I remember that my visits to Disney World were some of my most vivid memories, despite the fact that most of the rides terrified me. I liked being completely immersed in a world of fantasy. I expect that's true of most children), so naturally this video drew in more than the others, as it brought back a lot of what I felt on those visits.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left; text-indent: 25px;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left; text-indent: 25px;">
Among the numbers in this video were two that especially marked me as a child: "Makin' Memories" and "Grim Grinnin' Ghosts".</div>
<br />
<br />
<center><iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="375" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/sSCGUynGfhI" width="500"></iframe><br />
<br />
<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="281" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/eavo08IXduQ" width="500"></iframe></center><center><br /></center><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left; text-indent: 25px;">
Now, I know why "Grim Grinnin' Ghosts" has stuck with me all this time - because it thoroughly and completely terrified me as a child. I literally could not watch it. I remember constantly having to fast-forward through it because I knew that watching it would give me nightmares.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left; text-indent: 25px;">
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/5/56/John_Henry_Fuseli_-_The_Nightmare.JPG/741px-John_Henry_Fuseli_-_The_Nightmare.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/5/56/John_Henry_Fuseli_-_The_Nightmare.JPG/741px-John_Henry_Fuseli_-_The_Nightmare.JPG" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Like this, but with a much prettier nightgown.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left; text-indent: 25px;">
I guess it follows that "Makin' Memories" would be the other number I'd remember, seeing as it directly preceded "Grim Ginnin' Ghosts". I remember that I could never fully enjoy the song as I kept anticipating the moment I'd have to quickly press fast-forward on the VCR remote and avert my eyes so as only to read the lyrics so I'd know when it was safe to look again...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://media.blurt-online.com/cPkqP59ztyV6_m.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="211" src="http://media.blurt-online.com/cPkqP59ztyV6_m.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left; text-indent: 25px;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left; text-indent: 25px;">
It's funny because though I almost always skipped it, I've apparently watched "Grim Grinnin' Ghosts" enough times to remember most of the lyrics. The riff at the beginning though, the ooooh ooooh ooooh ooooooooh... That would haunt my dreams. If I remember correctly, it became my trademark creepy song whenever I made up stories or games as a kid. It was the scariest thing I'd ever watched until "Signs" in sixth grade.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left; text-indent: 25px;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left; text-indent: 25px;">
It's sort of an interesting contrast when you think of it - at least for the grown-ups watching - filling you up with nostalgia about happier times then WHAM a song that's basically a thinly-veiled reminder of your own mortality. Should this have been a Macabre Monday instead?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left; text-indent: 25px;">

In my attempts to diversify the topics discussed here on Nostalgically Yours, I'm looking for topics that I've never discussed before. One such topic is poetry.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left; text-indent: 25px;">
I guess I'm just picky, or I haven't really explored the field enough, but I've never really been especially keen on poetry. It isn't that I don't enjoy it, I guess I just really don't expose myself to it enough. It's one of many things in my life I'm trying to work on. Of the few poets I do know, though, there is one to whom my mind wanders more than the rest, and that is a certain <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pablo_Neruda" target="_blank">Pablo Neruda</a>.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left; text-indent: 25px;">
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://gozamos.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/pablo-neruda.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="167" src="http://gozamos.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/pablo-neruda.png" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Neruda in his early Twenties</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left; text-indent: 25px;">
Neruda, born Neftalí Ricardo Reyes Basoalto, in Chile at the turn of the 20th Century became famous for his poetry from a very young age, having his first work published when he was all of 13. "Pablo Neruda" was the name he used to avoid being found out by his father, who did not approve of his son's writing aspirations. This pen name is believed to have been a combination of Czech Poet <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jan_Neruda" target="_blank">Jan Neruda</a> and French Poet <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Verlaine" target="_blank">Paul (or Pablo) Verlaine</a>. Despite his father's disapproval, Neruda continued to write under his pen name, and eventually adopted it as his legal name. His illustrious and varied career not only included verse, journalism, and other writing, but also diplomatic office, political leadership, and international negotiator and peace-maker.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left; text-indent: 25px;">
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://media.northjersey.com/images/300*232/011512neruda_dngnk.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="310" src="http://media.northjersey.com/images/300*232/011512neruda_dngnk.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr>

</tbody></table>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left; text-indent: 25px;">
His poetry, obviously, is what he is most remembered for, and rightly so. Gabriel García Márquez, author of "Love in the Time of Cholera" has called Neruda "the greatest poet of the 20th century in any language." Of course, there's no language like his original Spanish. I've gushed about Spanish before, and in <a href="http://www.nostalgicallyyours.blogspot.com/2010/10/music-mondays-shakira-hay-amores.html" target="_blank">a previous attempt t translating Spanish verse</a> I've said how so much of the beauty gets lost. If you have no other reason for learning Spanish, do it to hear Neruda's poetry in its original language.</div>
<br />
<br />

<br />
<center><iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="375" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/T5yADgMzGJo" width="500"></iframe></center><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left; text-indent: 25px;">
Of course, the words still retain their meaning when translated, but the rhythm and the song of the words are lost in the English version. There's just something about Spanish that gets me. The most mundane phrases can be filled with music to me when they're spoken in Spanish... I really do believe it is the most beautiful of the Romance Languages, if not all languages.</div>
<br />
<br />

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left; text-indent: 25px;">
To me, the challenge of writing poetry is creating that subtle musicality that can't be achieved with any other medium. In most songs, the melody carried the words. In poetry, the words must speak entirely for themselves, making it a very vulnerable medium. It's naked music.</div>

I encourage you all to explore the works of Neruda both in print and video form, though I find that listening to spoken words is more my style. Who are your favorite poets?</div>

<span style="font-size: large;"><i><b>WARNING:</b> This post contains images of bones, mummies, and other death-related things that some readers may find disturbing. If you'd like to read this post without pictures, please click <a href="http://nostalgicallyyours.tumblr.com/post/27337905894/food-for-thought-funeral-dress" target="_blank">here</a>.</i></span></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left; text-indent: 25px;">
Everyone dies, and we've all probably thought a bit about what we want our loved ones to do with our remains. However, of all the arrangements we think about, furthest from my mind would be the clothes I'd be buried in. Even further from my mind would be the idea of being disinterred for the purposes of historical studies.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left; text-indent: 25px;">
Of course, most of us are probably nowhere near as famous as, say, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eleanor_of_Toledo" target="_blank">Eleanor of Toledo</a>, who married <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cosimo_I_de%27_Medici" target="_blank">Cosimo I de' Medici</a> in 1539, effectively paving the way for the Medici's reign and is credited with being the first modern First Lady. She died in 1562 and was buried in this dress:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left; text-indent: 25px;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v31/operafantomet/renaissanceportraits/firenze2/eleanora1560s.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v31/operafantomet/renaissanceportraits/firenze2/eleanora1560s.jpg" width="338" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left; text-indent: 25px;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left; text-indent: 25px;">
When the Medici tomb was opened in 1857, this was one of the artifacts recovered. You can read more about it and other 16th century funeral dresses <a href="http://aneafiles.webs.com/renaissancegallery/extant.html" target="_blank">here</a>.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left; text-indent: 25px;">

<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://naergilien.info/planned/EleanoraBurialDress-300.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="158" src="http://naergilien.info/planned/EleanoraBurialDress-300.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">The extant dress, complete with lovely liquefied flesh stains.</td></tr>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left; text-indent: 25px;">
Of course, we have always turned to burial sites and tombs as insights into cultures past. In some cases, these sites remain some of the last undisturbed sources of historical artifacts. However, when disturbing the rest of the dead, what (if any) rules should be followed? Is there a time limit before it becomes creepy? Is it ever okay to dig up the dead for the sake of posterity?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left; text-indent: 25px;">
<br /></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left; text-indent: 25px;">
I suppose that in the presence of plunderers and grave robbers it's better for archaeologists to do it methodically and respectfully. If it will be done by hoodlums better to have the items preserved in a museum and used to learn new things about cultures past. I guess if you decided to be buried with all kinds of crazy riches, that sort of thing is to be expected. There's bound to be at least person who adopts the "You Can't Take it With You" way of thinking. In countries like Peru, the sacking of tombs for pottery, jewelry and other artifacts is pretty much commonplace. This industry is sustained by a black market of private collectors and tourists who, despite countless warnings against the destruction of cultural heritage, still buy the stolen goods for the sake of owning a piece of history.</div>

That brings up another point; museums. Is it wrong to display the personal belongings (and even the bodies) of ancient and not-so-ancient peoples? At what point does it cross over from interesting to macabre to show corpses in glass cases? The mummies of Egyptian pharaohs don't seem to bother us too much, but what about the bodies of regular people, mummified naturally and were disinterred between 1865 and 1958 if and when family members were unable to pay the please don't dig up my dead relatives tax. Apparently the bodies were dumped in a warehouse, and the mummified bodies attracted enough attention to eventually warrant the construction of a museum for the corpses. No, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mummies_of_Guanajuato" target="_blank">seriously</a>.</div>

How is this different from viewing the remains of a king? Does him being an important personage make it okay? I've always found museums to be spooky for this very reason: to see a person's entire life on display. Especially when so many different lives (and cultures) are crammed into one building. It must be at the very least bad karma.</div>

We don't really think about are adverse conditions in which our own bodies might be freakishly preserved and then put on display like the above-mentioned Mummies of Guanajuanto, so I assume we also wouldn't think about a situation where our entire city might become a walk-through horror show/monument. That's exactly what happened to the people of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pompeii" target="_blank">Pompeii</a> and <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Herculaneum" target="_blank">Herculaneum</a> in 79CE when Mount Vesuvius Erupted and buried large expanses of both cities with <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pyroclastic_flow" target="_blank">unbelievably hot pumice and ash</a>. Those who were unlucky enough to be in the path of this terrifying torrent had their lungs with hot ash with had the charming effect of both burning their lungs like rice paper and suffocating them at the same time. The pyroclastic flow was so fast that most people didn't even have time to react to what was happening to them, and their last moment was preserved long after their bodies had smoldered away, since the very pumice that killed them decided that the awful way in which it killed them wasn't awful enough and decided that preserving their grotesque final expressions was the perfect salt to rub into wound created when their brains exploded from the intense and sudden heat.</div>

When Pompeii and Herculaneum were excavated, one of the archaeologists discovered that by encasing the skeletons they found in concrete, they could fill in the negative space left by the skin and organs to re-create and preserve these people's most terrifying moment.</div>

Then we have places like the Sedlec Ossuary in Prague where the remains of between 40,000-70,000 people who died during the Black Plague and Hussite Wars. Oh, but it gets better. When they remodeled the church in the 19th Century, they looked around the Ossuary and thought, "Gee, these bones are a bit of a downer. Yeah. They basically turned it into the death-obsessed Victorians' wet dream. I don't get it either, but the necessity for burial space during outbreaks of Plagues and other Epidemics seems to be the perfect fodder for horror fests such as these. Of course, nowadays our history books seems to glaze over a lot of the bits about death and dying and how a good chunk of our historical record of Past Civilizations comes from their tombs. Though I like it a lot more than the outlook we had just over a hundred years ago.</div>

I'm not trying to prove a specific point here, mind you. I'm not trying to say that all museums should be torn down or that studying ancient cultures is wrong. I'm mostly musing. In fact, I'd really like to hear your opinions on the subject. What do you think?</div>

This week I was fortunate enough to work with Dani Coleman over at Films by Neptune on their upcoming feature film, <a href="http://red.filmsbyneptune.com/" target="_blank">"Red"</a>, a psychological thriller based on "<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Little_Red_Riding_Hood" target="_blank">Little Red Riding Hood</a>" starring <a href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0272706/" target="_blank">Jodelle Ferland</a>. The film is still in pre-production as Neptune is trying to get the funding started via Kickstarter. Well as part of the Kickstarter initiative, Dani asked me to create two original, exclusive designs which you can have if you donate, along with all kinds of other amazing goodies! Here are some low-quality copies of the illustrations.</div>

If you like what you see here, and are interested in helping out, I urge you to check out their Kickstarter video <a href="http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/filmsbyneptune/films-by-neptunes-red" target="_blank">here</a>! This is a project with lots of promise and they still have a ways to go before they reach their goal, so please give what you can and tell your friends! It's been an honor to be a part of this project and I can't wait to see it through.</div>

Now, if you're like me, you abhor feet but are inexplicably obsessed with shoes. If you do, you'll be very excited by today's topic: where to buy the perfect shoes for your retro/vintage outfits!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left; text-indent: 25px;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left; text-indent: 25px;">
First, I'll start off with the shoes that sparked the idea for this article: American Duchess' "Pompadour"</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.american-duchess.com/shoes-18th-century/pompadour-french-court-shoe-white" target="_blank"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://images.american-duchess.com/cache/data/pompadour-french-court-shoes-white-6-340x340.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left; text-indent: 25px;">
American Duchess makes shoes in the style of periods ranging from the 17th to the early 20th centuries. Being simple yet beautifully crafted and simply styled, they are perfect for the avid costumer as they can be worn with a variety of period costumes. Visit their website <a href="http://www.american-duchess.com/" target="_blank">here</a>.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left; text-indent: 25px;">
Next we have <a href="http://www.modcloth.com/shop/shoes" target="_blank">ModCloth</a>. They are well-known for their fabulous retro styles, but they also have a wide and varied collection of delightful footwear perfect for any vintage/retro wardrobe. Here are some of my favorites:</div>

Finally, a great little boutique called Trashy Diva. They actually have two brick-and-mortar stores <a href="http://www.trashydiva.com/about-us/" target="_blank">here in New Orleans</a>, but most of their stock is also available online. Aside from a lovely line of vintage-inspired dresses for women and (just recently) children, <a href="http://www.trashydiva.com/" target="_blank">Trashy Diva</a> also carries an extensive line of quite spectacular shoes; shoes like these:</div>

In following with my theme from last week, I've decided to put up another retro comic - from some of my early attempts at fancy picture-editing software. These were done after the remake of "The Poseidon Adventure" came out in 2006. These are the worst places to be on Poseidon:</div>

Some of you readers may have heard of the comedy duo of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/French_and_Saunders" target="_blank">French and Saunders</a>, composed of comedians <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dawn_French" target="_blank">Dawn French</a> and <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jennifer_Saunders" target="_blank">Jennifer Saunders</a>. While they are most famous for their eponymous sketch comedy show which ran for nine seasons between 1987 and 2007, they have also featured in many other television programs, both together and separately - shows such as "<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Vicar_of_Dibley" target="_blank">Vicar of Dibley</a>" and "<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Absolutely_Fabulous" target="_blank">Absolutely Fabulous</a>" - and they've usually had a hand in the writing. Fewer are the programs they've starred in that they haven't written or created. One such show is the period comedy "<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Let_Them_Eat_Cake_(TV_series)" target="_blank">Let Them Eat Cake</a>".</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://ia.media-imdb.com/images/M/MV5BMjA3ODcwNTkzN15BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwNjI2NDE2MQ@@._V1._SY317_CR3,0,214,317_.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://ia.media-imdb.com/images/M/MV5BMjA3ODcwNTkzN15BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwNjI2NDE2MQ@@._V1._SY317_CR3,0,214,317_.jpg" width="270" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left; text-indent: 25px;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left; text-indent: 25px;">
Set in 1782 in the palace of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Versailles" target="_blank">Versailles</a>, the writers had probably intended the show to lead up to Revolution, but it never made it past its first nine-episode season in 1999. The story centers around the Colombine, Comtesse de Vache (Saunders) and her staff - a maid (French) and a couturier (played by Adrian Scarborough). She is the most hated and reviled woman in France for she has the dirt on everyone at court, and has a standing rivalry with Madame de Plonge. I'm surprised the show was cancelled. I think it's quite hilarious. The chemistry between the trio is quite amazing, and the writing is excellent. Ah, well. Luckily we are able to enjoy the existing episodes on Youtube:</div>

Last week I talked about <a href="http://www.nostalgicallyyours.blogspot.com/2012/06/movie-mondays-great-gatsby.html" target="_blank">Baz Luhrmann's upcoming film, the Great Gatsby</a>. Well, for the rest of the week it seemed like more and more upcoming movies kept dropping out of the sky so I decided to do another article on upcoming features.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left; text-indent: 25px;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://images.zap2it.com/images/movie-9252030/tcm-presents-singin-in-the-rain-60th-anniversary-event.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://images.zap2it.com/images/movie-9252030/tcm-presents-singin-in-the-rain-60th-anniversary-event.jpg" width="266" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left; text-indent: 25px;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left; text-indent: 25px;">
First of all, this year is the 60th anniversary of "<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Singin'_in_the_Rain" target="_blank">Singin' in the Rain</a>", and in honor of the event, a new digital transfer will be released in theaters for one night only! The film will also feature a behind-the-scenes documentary and interview with star Debbie Reynolds. I've already bought my tickets and I can't wait! In addition to the limited theatre release, a limited edition Blu Ray box set is already available for pre-order, including all kinds of special features, nifty extras, and an actual umbrella! Book your tickets to the premiere at Fathom Events, and click the image below to purchase the BluRay/DVD box set.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left; text-indent: 25px;">
Second, a project a long time in the making. Many of you have probably heard of "A Star is Born", but whether it was the original version from 1937 starring Janet Gaynor and Fredric March, or the 1954 version starring Judy Garland and James Mason, or the 1976 version starring Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson will depend on who is reading this article.</div>

</center><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left; text-indent: 25px;">
What you might not know is that Clint Eastwood's latest project is a reboot of "Star" featuring Beyoncé Knowles. Similar to the struggle Luhrmann went through in casting "Gatsby", Knowles has been attached to the project for quite some time, but the question of the leading man has been quite an ordeal. Early potentials have included Russell Crowe, Christian Bale, and Leonardo DiCaprio, but the project seems to have landed finally on the shoulders of Tom Cruise. I know. I squirmed, too. Apparently this role would be a reiteration of sorts of Cruise's role in "Rock of Ages"... Because that movie did so well in the box office, right?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left; text-indent: 25px;">
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.usmagazine.com/uploads/assets/photo_galleries/regular_galleries/1700-rock-of-ages-meet-the-movies-cast/photos/1338930327_rockofages-catherinezetajones-640.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="350" src="http://www.usmagazine.com/uploads/assets/photo_galleries/regular_galleries/1700-rock-of-ages-meet-the-movies-cast/photos/1338930327_rockofages-catherinezetajones-640.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><i>"I'll make millions, you say? It can't fail, you say? I'll do it!"</i></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left; text-indent: 25px;">
What were you thinking, Catherine Zeta-Jones? Anyway, allegedly the project was delayed by Knowles' pregnancy and may be going into production soon. Here's hoping that the project is delayed long enough for the male lead to change hands at least once more.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left; text-indent: 25px;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left; text-indent: 25px;">
Third, a project that only exists in theory so far, and will hopefully never come to fruition. Brace yourselves. No, really. Sit down. Recently, in an interview, Justin Bieber expressed his desire to play Danny Zuko in a remake of "Grease". </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left; text-indent: 25px;">
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Because, apparently, "Grease 2" wasn't bad enough...</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left; text-indent: 25px;">
Apparently it's been talked about for quite some time. So much so that he's already got his Sandy all picked out. Wait for it - Miley Cyrus. Can you imagine a more inappropriate casting for "Grease"? I can't. Let's hope that like many a potential Grease remake before it, this one will fade into obscurity. If anything they should switch the roles. Even that would be a step up.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left; text-indent: 25px;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left; text-indent: 25px;">
Last month a protest was held on the famous Saville Row. Several hundred people took to the street to protest the encroaching of Abercrombie & Fitch upon one of the most Venerable Institutions of the Fashion Industry. Unfortunately, this protest - or the cause of it, rather - heralds the final chapter of the Age of Couture.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left; text-indent: 25px;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.thevintageguidetolondon.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/banner.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="712" src="http://www.thevintageguidetolondon.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/banner.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left; text-indent: 25px;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left; text-indent: 25px;">
This all started at the end of the 19th century, with a man named Charles Dana Gibson. Gibson was a turn of the century illustrator, and while he didn't invent the styles of the 1890s and 1900s, he is widely credited with popularizing the look we now know as the "Gibson Girl". This might not have been revolutionary. It might have been simply the latest in the series of fashionable changes to Victorian dress, except for one thing: for the first time in history it became fashionable for women to wear separates.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left; text-indent: 25px;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left; text-indent: 25px;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left; text-indent: 25px;">
Before then, stylish ladies had worn dresses almost exclusively. This had left dressmaking in the exclusive realm of individual tailors and seamstresses, as the corseted and bustled figures made standardized sizing and mass-manufacturing impossible. The only people who bought pre-made clothing were sailors and other workmen who didn't have any family to make them clothes. This was looked down upon by the upper classes. While Sears-Roebuck and others also produced clothing for their catalogues, these, too, were considered déclassé.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left; text-indent: 25px;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left; text-indent: 25px;">
With the arrival of these fashionable separate skirts and blouses (then known as shirtwaists), standardized measurements and mass production became not only a possibility but a reality. Manufacturers began popping up all over major cities - you may have heard of the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left; text-indent: 25px;">
Ready-to-wear slowly pushed it's way to the forefront of culture and society, and got special boosts with each of the world wars. However, couture was still king in the fashionable circles. Wealthy women still traveled to Paris each season to purchase new gowns, dresses, suits, etc.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left; text-indent: 25px;">
The next part of the story begins on October 23rd, 1957. Christian Dior, the toast of Paris, dies of a heart attack while on vacation in Montecatini, Italy. In his wake, Yves Saint-Laurent is tapped to take over the fashion juggernaut that is Dior. However, after only a few years, the investors butt heads with the young designer purposefully fail to have him excused from his military conscription. After several years of struggles with military service, doctors, and drugs, Saint-Laurent pulled himself together and in 1966 announced a ready-to-wear line. While other designers also had prêt-à-porter lines in the works, YSL is greatly credited with being the first due to his strong ideas on the subject of democratizing fashion. Saint-Laurent's Rive Gauche stores were a huge success, and this spelled the beginning of the end for couture.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left; text-indent: 25px;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left; text-indent: 25px;">
It's interesting to note that it was around this time that the miniskirt came into fashion. This is widely considered to have been the last major fashion trend. Nothing since has been so widely pervasive as the miniskirt, and it heralded the end of institutionalized fashion, where Parisian couturiers dictated the styles to the masses.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left; text-indent: 25px;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left; text-indent: 25px;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left; text-indent: 25px;">
Nowadays, design companies lose money on their couture lines, and they are becoming less and less prevalent as the shows become too expensive to produce and as more and more of the artisans and craftspeople who provided lace, feathers, beading, and all of that to the design houses fold due to economic hardship. In spite of this, Saville Row has remained a bastion of bespoke against the rising tide of ready-to-wear. The tailors and seamstresses of Saville Row resent that a fast fashion company such as Abercrombie & Fitch would trespass onto what is effectively the Vatican of tailoring, and consider it both disrespectful and an economic threat.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left; text-indent: 25px;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left; text-indent: 25px;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left; text-indent: 25px;">
However, will their cries be ignored? Will the suit-makers of Saville Row be swallowed up by fast fashion the way Barnes & Noble or Starbucks swallowed up so many businesses before them? Will centuries of experience and incomparable quality be replaced by lower prices and quick turn-around times? I believe they will, sadly. They simply cannot compete in a society that holds price above all other aspects of a product. I hope they'll stick around for a while yet, and at the very least live to preserve their wisdom for posterity.</div>

Many of you have probably seen the trailer for Baz Luhrmann's upcoming interpretation of what is probably one of the single most famous novels ever written: <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/F._Scott_Fitzgerald">F. Scott Fitzgerald</a>'s <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Great_Gatsby">The Great Gatsby</a>:</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.impassionedcinema.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/watch-trailer-for-baz-lurhmann-the-great-gatsby-leonardo-dicaprio-carey-mulligan-tobey-maguire.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="298" src="http://www.impassionedcinema.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/watch-trailer-for-baz-lurhmann-the-great-gatsby-leonardo-dicaprio-carey-mulligan-tobey-maguire.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<center></center>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left; text-indent: 25px;">
Since Lurhmann announced the project in 2008, Gatsby has been the center of much controversy and debate by movie-goers and Fitzgerald fans alike. The casting process was quite drawn out, even Luhrmann himself considered dropping out of the project at one point, but instead we found ourselves with:</div>
<ul>
<li>Leonardo DiCaprio as Jay Gatsby</li>
<li>Carey Mulligan as Daisy Buchanan</li>
<li>Tobey Maguire as Nick Carraway</li>
</ul>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left; text-indent: 25px;">
However, it isn't the stellar cast that is causing a ruckus, it's Luhrmann's portfolio. Many people worry that the subtlety of Fitzgerald's novel will become a grotesque <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comedy_of_manners">comedy of manners</a>. Luhrmann himself has been quoted as saying that he intended to use this vehicle as a timely social commentary on the ever-increasing gap between the upper and lower classes, as well as the behaviors of the wealthy. Others criticize Luhrmann's departure from accuracy in his portrayal of the 1920s in costume, setting, and especially music. They worry that his splashy directorial style will take away these extremely important elements to the plot.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://joyhog.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/the-great-gatsby-2012-movie-trailer-0.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="333" src="http://joyhog.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/the-great-gatsby-2012-movie-trailer-0.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left; text-indent: 25px;">
The first trailer for the film came out on May 22nd, 2012. It did little to quell fears. In fact, it has given new fire to the debates, for all of the aforementioned reasons:</div>
<br />
<br />
<center><iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="281" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/rARN6agiW7o" width="500"></iframe></center><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left; text-indent: 25px;">
I will say I'll be pretty disappointed if Luhrmann doesn't end up using at least some period music. After all it is a huge element of the period. The setting and costumes, while highly stylized, seem to work for me. I also definitely get the sense that the intimacy and the intensity of the relationship between Daisy and Gatsby is well executed. I'm ambivalent. I don't feel comfortable making a call until I see the whole movie. I guess I'm hoping mostly for a Daisy Buchanan that I don't find completely and unbearably obnoxious.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left; text-indent: 25px;">

<span style="font-size: large;">"<b>Hindsight:</b> <i>Noun,</i> Recognition of the realities, possibilities, or requirements of a situation, event, decision etc., after its occurrence."</span></blockquote>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left; text-indent: 25px;">
This segment is all about looking back on the things in pop culture, <a href="http://nostalgicallyyours.blogspot.com/2010/11/hindsight-on-how-to-be-lovely.html">beauty</a>, or <a href="http://nostalgicallyyours.blogspot.com/2010/09/hindsight-not-your-mommas-platform.html">fashion</a> that we kind of regret; the sorts of things that leave us wondering why we ever thought they were cool. One of the richest sources for these sorts of flashbacks is the music video. Some of the coolest videos from ten or twenty years ago seem ludicrous to us today. Sometimes, too, the videos are just plain bad - like this one:</div>
<br />
<br />
<center><iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="375" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/-1pMMIe4hb4" width="500"></iframe></center><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left; text-indent: 25px;">
The song is based on <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emily_Bront%C3%AB">Emily Brontë</a>'s only novel, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wuthering_Heights">Wuthering Heights</a>. Actually, you know what this video really needs? No, not a lower key or a choreographer, it just needs a costume change and to be set in the woods. <i>Oh wait.</i></div>

I've actually blogged about this show before, but I've recently discovered some new episodes. I don't know if they're entirely new or just new to YouTube, but I had not seen these until now. In this episode, the Supersizers eat their way through the Roaring Twenties!</div>

For those of you who don't know (or haven't yet watched the above video), Giles Coren (food critic) and Sue Perkins (entertainer) take on the challenge of eating the foods and (somewhat) living their lives as if they lived in different periods of history: Edwardian, Georgian, Restoration, etc. While the show takes a very loose approach to everything but the food, it's really fun to watch, and you always end up learning something. I'm definitely a cat person. Sometimes, though, my cats can get on my nerves; specifically due to their seemingly spiteful sense of timing:</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left; text-indent: 25px;">
I recently stumbled onto a very, <b><i>very</i></b> interesting Tumblr: Draw This Dress, where the incredibly talented duo of Emily Carroll and Vera Bee get together and draw beautiful garments from bygone eras. Here are some examples:</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://verabee.com/image/girldoodle129_lg.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://verabee.com/image/girldoodle129_lg.jpg" width="318" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://emcarroll.com/art/costumelady09.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://emcarroll.com/art/costumelady09.jpg" width="290" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left; text-indent: 25px;">
Stunning. It's one of those things that just turns me green with envy at the sheer talent of these women, but I'm sure you're wondering why I called this "Macabre Monday" if I was just going to show you a bunch of pretty dresses - well, I'll get to that soon enough. If you have the time, also check out the sites they used for reference, such as <a href="http://yeoldefashion.tumblr.com/">Ye Olde Fashion</a> or <a href="http://omgthatdress.tumblr.com/">OMG! That Dress!</a>. They have tons of amazing vintage and antique clothing for you to ogle, drool over, put into your swipe files, or what have you.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left; text-indent: 25px;">
<a href="http://verabee.com/">Vera Bee's website</a> contains lots of beautiful artwork and a rather bizarre <a href="http://vimeo.com/23993191">animation</a>, but it was Emily Carroll's site that really dragged me down the rabbit hole of the macabre. Most of you are probably familiar with fairy tales, and because of movies like <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Brothers_Grimm_(film)">The Brothers Grimm</a> or television shows like <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Once_Upon_a_Time_(TV_series)">Once Upon a Time</a> many of you will probably be familiar with the much darker origin of the fairy tale; stories told to young children to basically scare them into behaving. These were the original <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goosebumps">Goosebumps</a>.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left; text-indent: 25px;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left; text-indent: 25px;">
Wait for it. Here comes the macabre. If you know about these uber-macabre stories (for instance, how <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Little_Mermaid">the Little Mermaid actually tries to stab her prince</a>, or how <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sleeping_Beauty">Sleeping Beauty's mother-in-law was actually an Ogress who repeatedly tries to eat her grandchildren</a>), and still enjoy them, I strongly encourage you to check out the Comics page on Carroll's website. <b>However, these are not for the faint of heart or stomach.</b> You have been warned. Check out Carroll's amazing comics <a href="http://www.emcarroll.com/comic/">here</a>. Hope you all had a lovely weekend!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left; text-indent: 25px;">
Now, I wasn't sure whether or not to wait to do this post, seeing as the Cannes Film Festival is still in full swing, and there are still several red carpets to, so maybe I'll end up doing some special weekend posts about the rest... or maybe not. Anyway, I realized a fun way for me to cover red carpet events without it just being another runway fashion review - I'll sort the gowns I like or don't like by time period! Here we go:</div>
<br />
<br />
<center><b><span style="font-size: large;"><u>1900s</u></span></b>
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Romantic lace, a soft decolletage, and the diamond collar necklace all make for a beautiful Gibson Girl silhouette on the lovely Eva Herzigova. The a-la-Draper hair is simple and elegant.<br />
<br />
<b><u><span style="font-size: large;">1910s</span></u></b></center><center><br /></center><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<center>Grecian detail, a wide belt, and chiffon shoulder panel all give a dash of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lucy,_Lady_Duff-Gordon">Lucille</a> to Eva Longoria's gown.</center><center><br /></center><center><b><u><span style="font-size: large;">1920s</span></u></b></center><center><br /></center><br />

<br />
<center>The simple design, drop waist and tiered ruffle skirt all give Ms. Rossy de Palma a Flapperish Flair. <center>I find it ironic that Ms. Fonda should have been picked for this decade, as it was the decade of her youth. Her sweetheart neckline, ratted hair, and cinched waist all bring back the stylin' sixties.</center><center><br /></center><center><u><b><span style="font-size: large;">1970s</span></b></u></center><center><br /></center><br />

<center>I'm torn. I really can't tell how I feel about these disco era digs. They are very seventies, and very very much the color of mustard. Either way that is <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charlie_Chaplin">Charlie Chaplin</a>'s grand-daughter.</center><center style="text-align: left;"><br /></center><center>

Hope this was fun! I might go through this again next week to round up some more dresses... Or I may simply update this post. Either way you'll be updated of anything I do with this. Have a great weekend, readers!</div>

Sometimes when I listen to songs - especially ones that tell specific stories, I'm left wondering exactly how certain things would go down:<br />

Last week, <a href="http://www.youtube.com/user/STEVEHAYESTOQ?feature=watch" target="_blank">Tired Old Queen at the Movies</a> celebrated filmed their 100th episode! I've <a href="http://nostalgicallyyours.blogspot.com/2010/11/tired-old-queen-at-movies-heiress.html" target="_blank">written about Steve Hayes' webseries before</a>, and I still thoroughly enjoy watching his reviews. To mark the occasion, Hayes decided to take a look at one of his (and my) favorite films: <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/All_About_Eve" target="_blank">All About Eve</a>.</div>

I have always enjoyed his quirky commentaries and impressions. Congratulations, Mr. Hayes! Here's to 100 more episodes! Be sure to subscribe to his <a href="http://www.youtube.com/user/STEVEHAYESTOQ?feature=watch" target="_blank">Youtube Channel</a> and follow him on <a href="http://twitter.com/#!/stevehayestoq" target="_blank">Twitter</a>.</div>
